Quick answer
QuickBooks error 6123 means QuickBooks cannot finish opening, updating, or restoring the company file you selected. The three usual causes are a file saved in a newer version, a drive or network path that no longer resolves, and an unsupported location such as a cloud-sync folder. Confirm the version, repair the path, then run File Doctor.
What QuickBooks error 6123 means
QuickBooks reports error 6123 when it can see the company file but cannot open it in a usable state. Intuit documents the code as Error: -6123, 0 and ties it to three moments: opening, upgrading, or restoring a company file, including restoring a backup on a new computer.
The fix depends on which of these three situations you are in:
- A version mismatch. The file was created in a newer QuickBooks Desktop version, edition, or region than the copy installed here. A newer version opens older files; an older version cannot open a newer file.
- A location problem. The file sits on a disconnected external drive, a reassigned mapped drive, an offline network share, or a cloud-sync folder such as OneDrive or Dropbox.
- ARM hardware. Intuit notes that -6123, 0 often appears on ARM-based computers with Snapdragon or Qualcomm processors, because QuickBooks Desktop is built for Intel and AMD processors.
One rule applies to every case: open the company file from inside QuickBooks, not Windows Explorer. Intuit warns that launching the .QBW from a folder can produce the error by itself.
Symptoms that point to error 6123
- The error appears right after you select the company file, or during the company-file update prompt.
- The same dialog appears when you restore a
.QBBbackup from a network folder, external drive, or online-storage folder. - The file opens on one computer but fails on another — a sign the problem is version or path, not data.
- QuickBooks starts and a sample file opens, but your company file does not.
Common causes, ranked by how often they appear
- The company file is newer than the installed version. This happens after a downgrade, on a computer running an older release, or when a file is restored from a newer machine. The update cannot run, and 6123 is the result.
- The drive or folder path no longer exists. A disconnected USB drive, a renamed server share, or a reassigned mapped drive breaks the stored path.
- The file lives in an unsupported location. QuickBooks is not designed to run company files from cloud-sync folders or removable drives, and those locations cause lock and access failures.
- You opened the file from Windows Explorer. Intuit warns that opening the file this way can trigger Error -6123, 0.
- An edition or region mismatch. Enterprise company files cannot be opened in Pro or Premier, and files from another region return a "not created with a US version" style error.
- ARM hardware or install damage. Snapdragon or Qualcomm systems do not run QuickBooks Desktop correctly, and a damaged installation or company file also produces 6123.
Back up before you repair. Copy the whole company-file folder — the .QBW, .TLG, and .ND files together — to a plain local folder or an external drive. That copy is your rollback point and what a recovery service needs if a repair goes wrong.
Before you begin
- Time: 20–45 minutes for the path and version checks, longer if File Doctor runs a full scan.
- Access: administrator rights on Windows, plus the QuickBooks admin password.
- Version: note the QuickBooks year and edition on each computer. Press F2 in QuickBooks to see them.
How to fix QuickBooks error 6123
Confirm the computer uses an Intel or AMD processor
Select Start, type About your PC, and press Enter. Look at Device specifications → Processor. If it says Snapdragon, ARM, or Qualcomm, QuickBooks Desktop is not supported on this computer, and 6123 is expected rather than something a patch will fix.
Run QuickBooks on an Intel or AMD machine, use a hosted virtual desktop from an authorized provider, or move to QuickBooks Online. If the processor is Intel or AMD, continue with the path and file checks.
Check the company file version with F2 or the update prompt
Open the file on a computer where it does open, then press F2 (or Ctrl + 1) to open Product Information. File Information shows the company file path and version, and the top of the window shows the installed QuickBooks year.
If the file will not open anywhere, use the signal QuickBooks gives when it tries to connect: the prompt says the file needs to be updated or was created with an incompatible version. The installed copy is older than the file. Install the matching or newer release and run the update again. The rules are strict — a newer version opens older files, an older version cannot open a newer file, Enterprise files do not open in Pro or Premier, and files from another region do not open in a US version. When the gap is several years, follow the QuickBooks upgrade guide so the file is stepped through correctly.
Reconnect the drive and rebuild the file path
In File Explorer, confirm the drive that holds the company file exists. Reconnect external drives and check that Windows assigned the same letter as before. If the file was on a mapped drive such as Q:, Windows may have reassigned it — open the share by its full UNC path instead, for example \\Server\Share\CompanyFile.qbw.
If the original location is gone, restore the folder from backup, or copy the company file plus its .TLG and .ND companions to a local folder such as C:\QBData. The company file not found guide covers wildcard searches (*.qbw) and path repair.
Open the file from inside QuickBooks, not File Explorer
Start QuickBooks from the desktop icon, go to File → Open or Restore Company, select Open a company file, then browse to the .QBW. Do not double-click the file in File Explorer; Intuit links that habit directly to Error -6123, 0.
Sign in with the admin credentials, and let the update create its automatic backup if the file needs updating.
Test a sample company file to isolate the program
Close QuickBooks. Open the Windows Start menu, hold Ctrl, and select QuickBooks. Keep Ctrl held until the No Company Open window appears, then select Open a Sample file.
If the sample opens, QuickBooks is healthy and 6123 is tied to your file or its location. If the sample fails too, repair and reinstall QuickBooks before touching the company file.
Open a copy of the company file from a local folder
With everyone signed out, copy the entire company-file folder to your desktop or another plain local folder. Open QuickBooks, then go to File → Open or Restore Company → Open a company file and select the copy. Opening a copy in single-user mode does not change the original.
If the copy opens, the data is fine and the original drive or path caused 6123. Move the file to a supported local or server folder and rescan the folder in Database Server Manager if you use multi-user mode. If the copy fails too, the version or the file itself is the problem.
Run QuickFix my Program, then File Doctor
Download the current QuickBooks Tool Hub and open Program Problems → QuickFix my Program. It takes about a minute and repairs common installation problems. Then go to Company File Issues, select QuickFix my File, then Run QuickBooks File Doctor. Choose your file, select Check your file, and enter the admin password.
A scan takes 10–15 minutes on a large file and may report that it was unsuccessful even when it fixed the problem. Try opening the file anyway. The File Doctor guide explains each option.
Use the right restore method for a backup
If 6123 appears while restoring a .QBB, move the backup off the network, external drive, or online-storage folder and onto the local hard drive first. Restore it with File → Open or Restore Company → Restore a backup copy.
If the backup refuses to open on a new computer, create a portable company file instead: open the original on the old computer, use the portable-copy option, carry the .QBM to the new machine, and restore from it.
Menu note. In recent QuickBooks Desktop builds the portable-copy option lives under File → Create Copy. In older builds the same option appears under Save Copy or Backup. Pick the portable company file format, not a backup.
Verify the fix
- Reopen QuickBooks as a standard user and open the company file.
- Press F2 and confirm the path and version in File Information.
- Run File → Utilities → Verify Data and confirm QuickBooks reports no problems.
- Create a fresh backup and restore it to a scratch folder to prove the file is accessible.
If error 6123 comes back
Match the recurring code to its context. An upgrade that fails twice often needs an intermediate version, because some files must be stepped through one version at a time. A restore that fails on the same backup usually needs the portable-file route. A move that fails on the same file points at damage in the file.
If File Doctor cannot repair it, Intuit Data Services can attempt recovery. Keep the original and its support files untouched — every extra repair attempt reduces what recovery can salvage. For repeated failures, see the company file repair order.
Prevention
- Keep every computer that opens the file on the same QuickBooks Desktop version and release; mixing versions is the fastest route back to 6123.
- Keep company files in a supported local or server folder, never in OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, or on a USB stick.
- Map network locations by UNC path (
\\Server\Share) and document the path so a reassigned drive letter cannot break it. - When you move or rename a company file, move its
.NDand.TLGfiles with it, or delete the old support files and rescan the folder in Database Server Manager.
Frequently asked questions
Does error 6123, 0 mean my company data is damaged?
Not necessarily. Intuit states that even when File Doctor repairs a 6123 error, the data should be safe. The code usually describes a version, path, or access problem rather than corruption. Run File → Utilities → Verify Data once the file opens to confirm the data is clean.
Can I open a company file created in a newer version of QuickBooks?
No. QuickBooks can upgrade an older company file to a newer version, but an older installation cannot open a file created in a newer year or another region. Install the matching or newer version and let the file update. Enterprise files also cannot be opened in Pro or Premier.
Why does error 6123 appear only when I restore a backup?
Backups restored from a network share, external drive, or online-storage folder are the usual trigger. Move the .QBB to the local hard drive and restore it from there. On a new computer, create a portable company file (.QBM) on the old machine and restore that instead.
Is error 6123 caused by my computer's processor?
It can be. Intuit links -6123, 0 to ARM-based systems with Snapdragon or Qualcomm chips because QuickBooks Desktop requires an Intel or AMD processor. Check About your PC before you spend time on file repairs.
