Quick answer
QuickBooks Online bank feed not working usually means one of four things: the connection needs re-authentication, the same account is linked twice, the bank is having an outage, or the browser session is interfering. Reconnect the account from Bank transactions, remove duplicate connections, then run a manual update. If the bank's own website works but QuickBooks still will not sync, contact the bank before changing your books.
What "QuickBooks Online bank feed not working" actually means
QuickBooks Online downloads transactions directly from your bank's servers. There is no company file, no .QBO import, and no Database Server Manager — those belong to QuickBooks Desktop bank feeds. In QuickBooks Online, a broken feed shows up in one of five ways: nothing new downloads, an error banner appears, duplicate transactions arrive, a bank or account is missing, or transactions download with the wrong details.
Version note. Intuit's current articles use All apps → Accounting → Bank transactions. Some accounts still show Transactions → Bank transactions or Bookkeeping → Transactions in the left navigation. The screen is the same even when the path differs.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| No new transactions for a day or more | Stalled connection or a bank that updates less often | Step 1 |
| "Fix your bank connection" (1000) or bank upgrade message (390) | Connection needs to be disconnected and reconnected | Step 4 |
| Every transaction appears twice | The same account is connected twice | Step 5 |
| Bank missing from the search list, or one account missing | Bank not supported or not sharing that account | Step 6 |
| Older transactions never appear | The bank's download window has passed | Step 7 |
Symptoms and error messages you may see
- Banners such as "Fix your bank connection... you will need to disconnect and reconnect your account. (1000)" or "Your Bank is making a change... you will need to reconnect your account. (390)".
- A fix now link on the bank account tile, sometimes with an error number such as bank error 377.
- The account tile shows a last-updated time from days ago, yet pressing Update finishes with nothing new.
- Transactions that appear once on the bank statement arrive twice in QuickBooks, or only part of the statement downloads.
- One bank account is missing from Bank transactions even though the bank connection exists.
Common causes, ranked
- The bank connection needs re-authentication. Banks change security requirements, expire consent, or reset sessions, and QuickBooks then asks you to reconnect before transactions flow again.
- The same account is connected twice. Two live connections to one account make QuickBooks download every transaction twice.
- The bank is down or changed its sign-in flow. QuickBooks cannot pull data while the bank's site is in maintenance or failing.
- The browser session is interfering. Cached sign-ins, extensions, or a stale tab block the bank's authentication screen.
- Credentials changed at the bank only. If the username or password changed on the bank's website but not in QuickBooks, the feed stops.
- The bank is not sharing the account. Accounts must be enabled for third-party access, and some account types are not supported.
- Transaction-level problems. Pending transactions do not download, very old transactions are outside the bank's window, and duplicates come from adding entries instead of matching them.
Review before you reconnect. Disconnecting and reconnecting makes QuickBooks download past transactions again, which creates duplicates if you have already added them. Clear out everything sitting in the For review (Pending) tab before you disconnect, and note the account's opening balance from the reconciliation screen.
Before you begin
- Confirm you can sign in to the bank's website yourself. QuickBooks uses the same credentials, so fix any bank login problem first.
- Only the primary account holder can authorize a connection; accountants cannot connect accounts for clients.
- Allow 15–30 minutes for reconnecting. If the problem is on the bank's side, allow 24–48 hours for the outage to clear.
- Decide whether each affected account should keep downloading or simply stop; disconnecting and making an account inactive are different actions.
How to fix QuickBooks Online bank feed problems
Run a manual update
Open All apps → Accounting → Bank transactions and select Update. If QuickBooks asks for multi-factor authentication, enter the code and select Continue update. You can keep working while the update runs; it can take a few minutes. Most banks refresh with QuickBooks once every 24 hours, so a feed that looks quiet may simply be between scheduled downloads. Only the transactions the bank sends during that window can appear; pending transactions are never downloaded.
Rule out the browser
Open a private or incognito window, sign in to QuickBooks, and run the update again. This removes cached sign-ins and most extensions from the equation. If the feed updates in the private window but not your normal one, clear the browser's cache and cookies, disable extensions one at a time, or switch to a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari. Mobile app users should complete connection fixes in a browser — QuickBooks redirects mobile connection errors to one anyway.
Check the bank's side
Sign in to the bank's website or app and look for outage notices, maintenance windows, or security alerts. Bank outages usually clear within 24–48 hours, and downloads resume automatically. Confirm the account is open and enabled for third-party data sharing. If the bank's site also fails, stop here and contact the bank.
Disconnect and reconnect a failed connection
When the error tells you to reconnect, review the For review (Pending) tab first, then select the account tile, select the pencil (edit) icon, and choose Disconnect account. Confirm the prompt. Now select Link account, sign in to the bank again, choose the accounts to share, set the download start date, and select Connect. Errors 390 and 1000 are resolved by exactly this sequence. After reconnecting, check the For review tab for transactions QuickBooks pulled a second time and exclude them.
Remove duplicate bank connections
In Bank transactions, confirm each real-world account appears only once. If the same account was connected twice — common after a QuickBooks Desktop migration or an accidental "Add new" during setup — QuickBooks downloads every transaction twice. Disconnect the extra connection with the pencil icon, then open Settings → Chart of accounts and make the duplicate account inactive so nobody posts to it. Keep the original account and its history. If the only problem is a password change, use Edit sign-in info on the account tile instead; reconnecting re-downloads transactions.
Add a missing bank or account
If your bank is not in the list, select Link account, search for it, and choose Request a provider so Intuit can review adding it. If the bank is listed but one account is missing, reconnect and make sure that account is checked during the shared-accounts step. If it still does not appear, ask the bank to enable that specific account for third-party sharing. For a bank you cannot connect at all, download a CSV or QBO file from the bank's website and upload it. The full connection walkthrough is in the bank feed setup guide.
Fix transaction errors and missing downloads
Most banks share at least 90 days of history, and some allow up to 24 months at connection time; anything older must be entered or imported manually. For wrong or duplicated entries, use the For review tab to match downloaded transactions to records you already have instead of adding them, and exclude copies that are truly redundant. If a bank rule auto-adds transactions, turn off auto-add so items wait for review. Credit card feeds can stall independently, so see the credit card feed fixes, and for transactions that arrive incomplete, use the transaction download guide.
Update the credentials QuickBooks uses
If you changed your bank username or password, reconnect the feed so QuickBooks stores the new sign-in. When an error offers a Send a request or fix-now link and says the original user must re-authenticate, forward it to the person who first connected the account; QuickBooks emails them a time-limited sign-in link. If that person has left the company, an admin should reconnect with current credentials.
Verify the feed is healthy again
- Run Update once more and confirm the accounts finish without an error banner.
- Check that new transactions appear in the For review (Pending) tab, not just in the bank's own app.
- Compare the account's QuickBooks balance with the bank's current balance.
- Wait for the next overnight download and confirm the feed advances without help.
- Review the account for duplicates and clear them before you reconcile it through the reconciliation workflow.
If the bank feed still will not work
Contact your bank first when its website works but QuickBooks cannot stay connected, when QuickBooks cannot find the bank, or when one account is missing. Ask for the team that handles QuickBooks or third-party connections, and confirm the accounts are activated for the service. Contact Intuit when the bank confirms its side is fine but the connection still fails, when you are stuck in a disconnect-and-reconnect loop, or when every feed stops at once. Keep screenshots of the exact error and the date of the last successful download. As a fallback, upload a statement file so categorization can continue. If you cannot sign in to QuickBooks at all, resolve that first.
Prevention
- Update the sign-in information in QuickBooks whenever you change bank credentials, before the feed fails.
- Connect each account once, and match downloaded transactions instead of adding duplicates.
- Turn off auto-add on bank rules so unusual transactions wait for review.
- Reconcile every account monthly; that routine catches stalled feeds and duplicates early.
- Watch bank emails about security changes and reconnect promptly when asked.
- Browse the bank feeds topic hub for related fixes.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my bank feed not updating even though it says connected?
Most banks send new transactions about once every 24 hours, and some less often, so a quiet day can be normal. Run a manual update. If two days pass with nothing new, check the bank's site for an outage, then disconnect and reconnect the account.
Will reconnecting my bank download duplicate transactions?
It can. When you reconnect, QuickBooks often downloads the past 90 days again, and any transaction you already added or matched can appear a second time. Review the For review tab before disconnecting, then exclude any true duplicates after reconnecting.
How do I remove a duplicate bank connection?
In Bank transactions, check that the account appears only once. If it appears twice, select the pencil icon on the extra connection and choose Disconnect account, then make the duplicate account inactive in Chart of accounts. Keep the original connection and its transaction history.
Why can't I find my bank in QuickBooks Online?
Search for the bank by name or URL first. If it still does not appear, choose Request a provider so Intuit can review it. In the meantime, download a CSV or QBO file from the bank and upload it manually so transactions keep flowing.
Is this the same as a QuickBooks Desktop bank feed problem?
No. QuickBooks Online connects from the cloud with no files or installers. QuickBooks Desktop bank feeds use Direct Connect or Web Connect (.QBO files) and have separate fixes.
